Student Counseling Center
Graduate students are over three times more likely than the average American to experience mental health disorders and depression. The Student Counseling Center at UTD is here to help if you or someone you know is struggling.
Services Offered
Individual Counseling provides one-on-one sessions with a counselor. Common reasons students seek counseling: managing stress, addressing feelings of depression or anxiety, relationship advice, and assessing alcohol and drug use.
Couple Counseling is for partners or families to gain insight in conflict resolution and building relationship skills. Only one person must be a student, and couples do not have to be married.
Group Counseling lets you improve personal, emotional, and behavioral skills, increase your confidence, and overcome blocks to personal effectiveness in a group setting with peers and facilitators. There are many types of groups offered every semester, including process groups, skills-based groups, and support groups.
Workshops let you learn more about common mental health concerns and engage in meaningful change. In each workshop, you will learn tangible coping skills and strategies to take home and try out.
Psychiatric Services If it's determined a student might benefit from psychotropic medication, they can be referred for psychiatric services. These are reserved for students engaged in counseling at the center.
LGBT+ Services are designed to ensure students of diverse sexual, romantic, and gender identities and expressions feel valued and affirmed. The SCC provides affirming individual, group, couples, and psychiatric services for LGBT+ students, in addition to the services provided by the Galerstein Gender Center
My Student Support Program provides 24/7 remote emotional health and wellbeing support to students in the form of a mobile app and is specifically geared towards serving students who reside out of state and internationally.
Consultation services are provided to UTD students, family members, and faculty/staff to assist with concerns related to the mental health or wellness of others
Outreach and Educational Programming the SCC offers outreach presentations which they offer to any group on campus when requested. They currently have presentations on helping a friend/student in distress, stress management, SCC services, self-care in college, and healthy relationships/connections. If you'd like to see a different presentation, they also will accept any requests by email.
Sexual Assault Recovery Students who have experienced sexual violence can receive confidential help in the form of consultations, counseling, emergency help, evidence collection, and reporting the assault, depending on the student's needs at that time.
Center for Students in Recovery helps students seeking recovery from drugs, alcohol, eating disorders, and other addictions or compulsive behaviors.
Comet Chat is a drop-in brief and informal mental health consultation. It's a simple one-on-one 15 minute consultation with a member of the SCC staff.
Additional Resources
In addition to the services offered by SCC staff listed above, they offer a number of resources available to anyone, such as:
BAIT (Behavior Assessment and Intervention Team) who reviews behavioral incidents and ensures a systematic response to students whose behavior may be disruptive or harmful to themselves or the UT Dallas community.
How to help a friend in distress, including ways you can support them, and who you can contact if you become worried about their wellbeing and safety.
If you want additional help off-campus, the SCC provides a referral guide of providers for mental health, substance abuse, and related services in North Dallas
